Brenda Thomas

I have always sewed a bit; curtains, some clothes etc. and when I retired I decided to take up patchwork and quilting. I didn't really know what I was doing. I used card and scissors as I'd not discovered rotary cutters, and made a big quilt by hand. I quilted by hand too, highlighting some of the patterns of the fabric. It was for my daughter and she loves it but its by no means perfect!

Then I bought a book, looked online, went to a quilt show , did a weekend course and things improved. My daughter gave me membership of the guild for my birthday and added Contemporary Quilt, which she calls Extreme Quilting. The Exe Valley Contemporary group has been an inspiration and a great source of support.
It was all new to me so I've had a go at everything on offer. I particularly like making pictorial wall hangings in a naive style, often of our wonderful south west coast.

Since writing the above I have made more pictorial quilts and won some awards at quilt shows. As a result I currently have a touring gallery with Grosvenor Shows. I have also begun to do talks and may begin running workshops this year.
